Review: Plier by Jane Washington
Title : Plier
Series: Ironside Academy
Source: Author provided for review
Ironside is more than a regular academy. It’s also the biggest reality TV show in the world … and a very elaborate, very luxurious prison. Their hallowed halls are ruled by the powerful Betas and the middling Omegas, with the plentiful Deltas as their main targets, but this year, the officials are stirring things up.
Isobel Carter—the only rare Sigma to be accepted—is the first sign. But there are others. Many others. A sudden influx of precious Alphas will turn academy life, and Isobel’s life, upside down. She might be the lowest rung on the ladder, but in order to survive Ironside, where social media is king and consequences are deadly, she will need to make her mark.
She will need to climb.
This isn’t a game for the faint of heart, and those who rise should be prepared for a beautiful, brutal fall.
Beware the pretty posers, because this social media game just got dangerous.
The Hunger Games collides with America’s Got Talent, and you’ve just been invited to binge it all in high definition. But here’s some viewer discretion before you continue:
This book is a “why choose” romance with as many book boyfriends as enemies, so expect a slow-to-medium burn. If you like your omegaverse, reverse harem, and academy troupes twisted and defiled to stretch your imagination, then this is the book for you!
Now it’s time to grab some popcorn and dive right in!
Sometimes you need an escape from the norm when you are sick and in a reading slump. Washington’s latest novel delivers that with her own unique brand of omegaverse and why choose. Ironside Academy is a school for the elite and it has its own brand and image that everyone in the school wants to be part of. Therefore, in order to survive Ironside and make something of yourselves, you need to have skills with social media. Our heroine Isobel is a new arrival and has a cruel twist or advantage to her, depending on how you view it. She is a sigma which makes her a target and vulnerable in a world of omegas, deltas, and alphas. Isobel is a fish out of water in this scenario as she is governed by her rank and forced into situations that lead her down a path where she is forced to play the games in this world. This world is unforgiving and is stacked against her given her designation. Washington makes you root for her as she unpacks this world and throws you into this Academy where people are made. As this Academy is no ordinary academy. EVERYTHING is recorded for the reality TV show that is broadcasted live across the globe and everyone wants a piece of it at any cost, and that means designations really come into play.
Isobel’s story has you glued to your seat of pants as you follow her through her highs and lows with this reality TV show world that unfolds at Ironside. The guys she creates to support Isobel through the highs and lows are perfect, and each brings something different to the table. There are the standouts amongst the guys that make you want to take them under your wing and push them in the right direction, but the time will come for that to happen. There is too much entertainment and storytelling happening that you forgot this story is a slow burn. The tension is delicious thanks to the slow burn and exactly what you need given the events that take place in this book. Isobel and her guys have become a standout and can’t wait to dive into the next book and discover how everything is going to play out as I’m in for the long haul to get this Hunger Game meet America’s Got Talent reality TV show to end, and love to prevail.
